Individual Awards: (Picture LtoR: Mike, Ben, Browning, Lance)

Outstanding Pitcher – Browning Chabot, Smalltown (4 W’s, 0 L’s, 21 IP, 5 R’s, 12 H’s, 22 K’s, 4 BB’s)

Outstanding Hitter – Lance Northstine, Smalltown (.571 avg)

Outstanding Player – Ben Schley, Cheboygan (.545 avg)

Outstanding Player – Mike Barber, Cheboygan (.500 avg)

Tournament Director Notes: During the championship game, Smalltown pitcher, Browning Chabot, was perfect through 3 innings until leading off the 4th inning with a 3-2 count base on balls to Dave Wright from the Cheboygan Merchants, always known to be a tough out. With two outs in the same inning, Ben Schley broke up the no-hitter with an RBI double just inside the foul line beyond first base to bring in Wright. Mike Barber led off the 5th inning for Cheboygan with a single. Lance Northstine had an outstanding game at the plate for Smalltown going 3 for 3 with a double and locking in the top tournament honors for outstanding hitter with a .571 average for the weekend.

Smalltown Fastpitch has a nice core of young players. Browning Chabot is a young pitcher who throws very well with a nice nucleus of young players and some veteran players to help guide them along. Manager, Fred Chabot (long-time first baseman for Eagle Products & Plangger’s Furniture that visited invitational tournaments in Petoskey for many years) is the father of Browning and Bent Chabot who are both solid players on this team, can be proud of this group’s progress. This team has been playing class D for the past three years with state finals finishes in 5th place in 2008, 9th place in 2007 and 5th place in 2006. I’d look for them to finish in the top three this year in class D and make the jump to class C in the near future. (2010 note - they won class D state finals.)

This was Smalltown’s first visit to Petoskey and unfortunately, the weather was cold and damp as we had rain during the first game Friday night with no stoppage in play, and then a cold drizzle during the evening games Saturday, once again playing through until midnight. Sunday morning games were played in bitter cold temperatures in the mid to upper 40’s with the frigid breeze coming in off the bay. Hopefully all of the team's next visit will leave a nicer impression of our accommodations on the bay.

Tournament Director Notes:

Nikki Nemitz, pitcher for Hooters in this tournament, will be participating with the USA National Team for the Pan Am Games 7/31-8/9/09 in Venezuela. She also has one more year to play at University of Michigan. We wish her well and appreciate her participation in our tournament in Petoskey.

This tournament was one of the overall strongest fields we have seen in years. The fact that no team went undefeated in pool play says a lot with this level of competition. We would like to thank the grounds crew from the City of Petoskey for doing a great job in preparing the field Sunday morning after an overnight thunderstorm left the field with several pools of standing water. The field was in great shape and there were no delays. We did play games in the rain Saturday night as the intermittent showers rolled through for about three hours. Temperatures were in the high 70’s to low 80’s and there was a nice incoming breeze off the bay all day on Sunday with temps in the high 70’s once again.

Tournament Director Notes: Rain and thunderstorms plagued the weekend by washing out the field Saturday morning resulting in a delay in resuming play until 6:00 pm Saturday night after the field had plenty of time to dry. Games from this point were five innings in length and 3 of the original Saturday games were moved to Sunday. Play finished Saturday night / Sunday morning at 2:30 am and resumed Sunday morning at 8:00 with a 40 minute rain delay Sunday morning to begin the day. The championship game went to the “if necessary” game and the final out was made at 5:45 pm Sunday afternoon. We modified the mercy rules to be 15 runs after 2 innings, 12 runs after 3 innings and 7 runs after 4 innings with the international tie breaker going into effect during the 6th inning. The results of these modifications made for some highly competitive games and things moved along pretty well which allowed us to play all games in this 15 game weekend tournament on just one field.
