Game 11 Note (Winner Bracket Final): Play was suspended in the top of the 3rd inning due to fog at 12:30 am Sunday when a fly ball to centerfield went unseen. One run scored on this play that should have been the 2nd out of the inning and runners ended up at 1st and 3rd by the time the play ended. Twisters were ahead 4-1 with one out when play was suspended. Play was scheduled to resume at 9:00 am Sunday. When play was resumed Sunday morning, the first hitter grounded out pitcher to first to make it two outs, then a single to bring in one run before the third out of the inning. It is possible to point to two runs scored as a result of the fog issue. Unfortunately, fog comes in at the waterfront in Petoskey quickly and there is little warning or ability to plan around this. The fog began rolling in during the 1st inning but would come in waves and players reported that play was not being impacted. The decision to suspend play was made by the plate umpire, the umpire in chief of the tournament, the tournament director and the local ASA commissioners who were all present at this very late hour.
(ASA Rule 5, Section 3, C: ...the umpire is empowered to call a game at any time because of darkness, rain, fire, panic or any other cause that places the patrons or players in peril. ASA Rule 5, Section 3, D: Games that are not considered regulation shall be resumed at the exact point where they were stopped.)
(The tournament got behind schedule after Game 5 that took 2 1/2 hours to play and 90 minute scheduled starts between games which were not enough time in scheduling which is noted for future reference by the tournament director.)

Tournament Director Game 11 Notes: Bottom of the 1st inning, line drive to the face of GLC pitcher, Ron Williamson; emergency personnel arrived within two minutes of the 911 call being made which was made within seconds of the incident. He remained conscious, was talking and coherent to other players and after authorized by emergency personnel, Rob was able to walk off the field under his own power while holding a towel to his face. He was transported to Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey by ambulance. Team representatives reported an hour later that he had called from the hospital and shared that he had fractured facial bones and was going to have some initial surgery. He came through surgery very well and was back at the ballpark to cheer his team on in the championship game just six hours later! We wish him a full and speedy recovery!

Tournament Director Notes: Top 4 teams qualify and plan to attend the state finals in Bay City over Labor Day weekend. This tournament was unique in it’s 5 extra inning games. We were all very glad to see Ron Williamson return to the field after his Sunday morning hospital visit due to being hit by a line drive. This tournament involved a cork centered ball which is a trial version approved by the state for the class C state finals this year. This ball is LESS reactive than the poly core balls but still comes off the bat quicker than the eye can see at times. The bat used in the incident involving the pitcher being hit by a line drive was an ASA approved bat via the national testing standards. Discussions will be encouraged at the MASA annual meeting in January that investigate additional ways that we can promote safety in softball.
