The scoreboard is behind the center field fence, which is marked at 280 feet, and in all of the years of slow pitch softball on this field, no one could remember anyone hitting the scoreboard with such force!

Tournament Director Notes: EJ opened the game with back to back homeruns off the bats of Nick Karaszewski and Josh Bush. Big Apple Bagels answered in the bottom of the 1st with 2 runs off the homerun of Sean Hoffman scoring Josh Peterson who had singled to lead off the bottom of the first. EJ took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 3rd only for Big Apple to answer in the bottom half with a solo homerun bringing about the pitching change from Hancock to Essenberg. Big Apple greeted Essenberg with another 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 6-3 lead. EJ came back with 4 runs in the top of the 4th inning to go up 7-6 which prompted the pitching change from O’Keefe to Hoffman for Big Apple. Big Apple answered in the bottom of the 4th inning with a 2 run homer from O’Keefe to go up 8-7. Things settled for a bit until the bottom of the 6th when Big Apple pushed another run across on a base on balls, wild pitch, fielder’s choice and then scored on another wild pitch to go up 9-7. Another base on balls in the bottom of the 6th brought about the pitching change from Essenberg to McIntosh to get the 3rd out of the inning. In the top of the 7th inning, EJ scored 2 runs and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs with a 9-9 score. They intentionally walked a batter to load the bases, got an infield pop-up, strike out and fly out to center to hold the tie at 9’s going into the bottom of the 7th inning. Lead off went out short to first for the first out before Andy Bouchard hit a game winning, walk-off solo homerun to end the game at 10-9 and give his team the 2012 Michigan Class C Men’s Fast Pitch State Championship. It was fun to watch and exciting for all involved!

Pre-Tournament Information:

Men's Class C state finals is returning to District 21 with the last time being in 2008. This tournament will be held in Charlevoix at their City fields located at 406 Carpenter Avenue, Charlevoix, MI 49720. There are two fields side by side and the larger field will have a temporary fence put up at approximately 250 feet. The second field is short in right field, about 200 feet, but has a 16 foot wall for a fence. Left field line is about 225 and it's about 245 feet in center field. Both fields have lights, scoreboards, scorekeeper stations with announcers, sprinkler systems and drain well in the event of rainy weather. The ballpark also has a full concession stand, children's playground with two basketball courts, and clean restrooms with baby changing stations.

Driving directions: from south, take M-66 or US 31 into Charlevoix, turn west at Pizza Hut located at the corner of Carpenter and Bridge Street (also US 31); from the north, 131 into Petoskey and then take US 31 South to Charlevoix 17 miles, go through downtown Charlevoix to the south side, turn right at Pizza Hut located at the corner of Carpenter and Bridge Street (also US 31). When coming into Charlevoix from the north during mid-day on Saturday when traffic and the draw bridge are likely delays, come into downtown Charlevoix and take the first right turn south of the draw bridge, Park Avenue, and then turn left on State Street and go approximately 1/2 mile, 7 main intersections and turn right on Carpenter Avenue. During this time of year, the draw bridge goes up every half hour at the top and bottom of the hour which causes traffic to come to a stand still for 5-10 minutes in the downtown area. Eligible teams must register with MASA no later than June 15th and have submitted their full rosters to their local commissioners by June 15th as well. Entry fee for MASA state tournaments will be $300 per team for the double elimination tournament. (Check made out to "D21 Softball".)

Entry deadline will be July 9th at 5:00 and tournament draw will take place no later than July 13th by 5:00 pm. The bracket will be posted on this website. All interested teams should contact Scott by email to make sure that your state finals entry form, your state roster and your entry fee, made out to "D21 Softball" and mailed to Scott at the address listed above. You may bring pick-up player forms signed by your local commissioner to the tournament site on July 20th but please make sure they are ELIGIBLE pick-up players (see general guidelines on the pick-up player form link).

Tournament Bracket & Draw

Bat testing in will take place at this tournament. A voluntary manager's meeting will take place at 5:00 pm on Friday at the ballpark. Please remind your players to bring picture identification for check-in at this tournament at least 60 minutes prior to their first scheduled game. MASA Uniform rules will be enforced where all players must be in full team uniform with a hat. Pick-up players may wear their own team's uniform but it is prefered that they be in full team uniforms as well. All jerseys must have numbers on the back with no duplicate numbers. Managers will need to turn in completed line-up cards to their respective scorer's booth at least 30 minutes prior to their scheduled game. Line up cards must have first name, last name, uniform number, position number for starters and all substitutes must be listed on the bottom of the line-up card with first name, last name and jersey number as well. Line up cards and game balls will be given to each manager by the tournament director when doing the coin toss about 45-60 minutes prior to each scheduled game.
