C&D Men's - Ed White
Memorial Invitational
Petoskey, Michigan
June 2 - 4, 2017
Ed White Memorial
Tournament. Ed was one of the three men responsible for coordinating tournaments
at the waterfront in Petoskey for over 30 years beginning in the 1960's. Ed was
an MASA Commissioner for over 40 years. Our ballpark at the waterfront is named
after Ed White and we are all indebted to his decades of tireless and thankless
efforts to create such a memorable softball experience for so many over the
years. This opening season tournament is our way of saying thank you to him and
his family. Ed passed away on May 30, 2006 at the age of 82.
Thank you to our Weekend

Tournament Director Note for this
tournament: There were 44 homeruns hit in this
tournament! We have not counted how many were hit in other
tournaments but for some reason this year, it jumped out at us. If any of you
are bored at work or sleepless at night, look through all of our "Results
Archive" page and count up how many homeruns were hit in a specific tournament.
If there is something that compares to this, please let us know. Keep in mind,
this tournament was only 11 games.

Tournament
Director Notes: Labadie Auto Sales entered the championship game
based on the final pool play game between Rebels and Majestic Taxidermy. If
Rebels would have won game #12, they would have been in the championship due to
fewest runs allowed and a 3 team tie at 3 wins and 1 loss. Majestic winning the
game placed them in a 3 way tie with Munn and Labadie but they had to hold
Rebels to 3 or less runs in the game to get into the championship game. Rebels
got their 4th run in the 6th inning of game #12 when they scored 3
runs to make it 7-4 and needed 3 runs in the top of the 7th to tie.
They started off the inning with a double, strike out and RBI single to go 7-5,
with a runner at first base and the tieing run at the plate for the next two
batters. The first hitter struck out and a long fly ball to the left fielder had
some people holding their breath until it came down in glove of the left fielder
near the warning track.
Labadie wasted no time in
the championship game scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning
with the help of an error that scored two and then an RBI single. They scored
two more in the 3rd inning with back to back triples and a wild
pitch. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Labadie secured the 7 run
mercy differential with a lead off homerun, single, triple and sacrifice fly to
get 3 more runs and make the score 8-1. Munn’s only run came on a homerun in the
3rd inning.
We awarded two outstanding
hitter awards due to the significant offensive display in this tournament. Jim
Virden from Majestic Taxidermy had 3 homeruns in one game and 2 homeruns in
another as he went 11-13, finishing with a .846 average. Scott Larsen from Munn
Manufacturing went into the championship game 9-11 and had a long fly out and a
walk in the championship to finish 9-12 with a .750 average.
Two weeks ago during the
Marquardt tournament for class A & B teams, we made a big deal of 44
homeruns hit in 11 games. This tournament saw 47 homeruns in 13 games. This is
somewhat to be expected as pitching is much different in a D/E tournament
compared to an A/B tournament.
